What I Love About Celebrity: Luxury Without the Stuffy Part

There are some vacations where you want waterslides, belly-flop contests and a whole lot of energy.
And then there are vacations where you walk onboard, look around and think...
Oh. This is nice.
That's how I felt when David and I sailed on Celebrity Silhouette.
Not look-at-me luxury.
Not fancy just for the sake of being fancy.
Everything simply felt a little more elevated.
The spaces were beautiful. The service was polished. There were comfortable places to sit with a drink and have a conversation. Even when there was plenty happening around the ship, it didn't feel like the ship was constantly demanding our attention.
The best way I know to describe it?
Celebrity felt a little like a really good country club at sea.
And I mean that in the best possible way.
It's low-key luxury.
I think sometimes the word luxury scares people off.
They hear luxury cruise and imagine formal dinners, stuffy spaces, expensive clothes and people silently judging which spoon you picked up.
Not the kind of place where you're worried you're using the wrong fork or wondering whether you packed clothes fancy enough to belong there.
I'm looking at you, Cunard. 😂
That's not what I mean when I talk about Celebrity.
Celebrity felt luxurious because everything felt thoughtful and elevated, but still comfortable.
We could get dressed up for dinner if we wanted to.
Or we could just relax.
Nobody was asking us to become different people because we were sailing on a nicer ship.
And THAT is my kind of luxury.
Two places on Silhouette completely won me over.
One was the Sky Observation Lounge.
And honestly, this probably tells you quite a bit about the way I like to vacation. 😂
Give me a comfortable chair, a giant wall of windows, an ocean view and nowhere I absolutely have to be.
I'm happy.
I loved having somewhere beautiful to just be.
No reservation. No agenda. No need for someone to entertain me.
Just sit down, look out at the ocean and stay awhile.
Sometimes I don't need a cruise ship to give me another thing to do.
Sometimes I want it to give me a really beautiful place to do absolutely nothing.
And then they put real grass on a cruise ship.
The other place I loved aboard Silhouette was the Lawn Club.
Actual grass.
On a cruise ship.
There's something wonderfully ridiculous about standing on real grass while you're sailing through the middle of the ocean. 😂
But it also represents what I liked about Celebrity.
The Lawn Club wasn't some giant attraction screaming:
YOU HAVE TO DO THIS BEFORE YOUR CRUISE IS OVER!
It was simply another interesting, beautiful space to enjoy.
Sit outside. Enjoy the weather. Look at the ocean. Spend some time together.
Slow down.
And maybe that's why I remember it so clearly.
Celebrity doesn't need to keep yelling, “LOOK AT ME!”
Some cruise ships are built around constant activity.
And sometimes that's exactly what I want.
That's one of the reasons you'll hear me say over and over again that I don't really have one favorite cruise line.
My favorite cruise line for what?
Because the vacation David and I want when we need to rest and reconnect may be completely different from the cruise I'd recommend for someone who wants nonstop entertainment from breakfast until midnight.
Celebrity gave us something different.
It gave us room.
Room for conversation.
Room to linger over dinner.
Room to sit somewhere beautiful without feeling like we should be moving on to the next activity.
Room to enjoy the person you're traveling with.
And I think there's something especially appealing about that when everyday life is already plenty loud.
Sometimes you don't need your vacation to give you more.
You need it to give you less noise.
But what if you're traveling with kids?
Celebrity is family friendly.
I just wouldn't describe it as family focused.
And there's a difference.
Celebrity and Royal Caribbean are sister brands, but they aren't trying to create the same kind of vacation.
If your kids travel with you, they might absolutely love Celebrity.
There are youth programs, pools and activities. And depending on your kids and how your family likes to travel, the more relaxed atmosphere may be exactly what everybody enjoys.
But here's probably the easiest way I know to explain the difference:
If your kids travel WITH you, Celebrity might be a great fit.
If you travel FOR your kids, I'd probably look somewhere else.
If the kids are dreaming about waterslides, rock-climbing walls, giant attractions and a ship where the activities themselves are a major part of the vacation, that's where Celebrity's sister brand, Royal Caribbean, starts making a whole lot more sense.
Neither approach is better.
They're just different vacations.
And knowing who the vacation is really for is one of the things that helps me figure out which cruise line belongs on your short list.
So who do I think Celebrity is really good for?
This isn't the cruise line I'd automatically recommend to everyone.
That's really the whole point of this series.
But if you tell me you're looking for beautiful spaces, good food, good service, ocean views and time together...
If you want your vacation to feel a little elevated without feeling pretentious...
If you appreciate having things to do but don't need someone waving an activity schedule in your face every five minutes...
That's when Celebrity gets really interesting to me.
You don't have to dress differently.
You don't have to act differently.
And apparently, you don't have to know the secret handshake to get into the country club. 😂
You just get to enjoy being somewhere really nice.
Apparently, we liked it enough to go back.
Because here's probably the best evidence I can give you that I really enjoyed our Celebrity experience:
We chose Celebrity for our 2027 Stay Salty Retreat.

Next October, David and I will spend Retreat week aboard Celebrity Beyond.
Retreat is the week we intentionally step away from everyday life, celebrate another year of Stay Salty, spend time together and have some of those bigger conversations about where this little business is going next.
It's part vacation.
Part business retreat.
Part marriage retreat.
And usually at least a few conversations that begin with me saying, “Okay, hear me out...” while David looks mildly concerned. 😂
So when we were deciding where we wanted to spend that week in 2027, Celebrity made a whole lot of sense.
Low-key luxury. Beautiful spaces. Good food. Time together.
Yep.
That'll do.
That's what I love about Celebrity.
This is the second installment of my What I Love About... series.
I'm not ranking cruise lines.
I'm not trying to decide which one is the best.
And I'm definitely not saying that because I love something, you automatically will too.
I'm sharing the things I've experienced firsthand that I think different cruise lines do particularly well.
Because when someone asks me:
“What's the best cruise line?”
I think there's a much better question.
“What's the best cruise line for the vacation I want to have?”
For Carnival, one of my answers was the fun they build around their drink experience.
For Celebrity?
It's the feeling.
That quiet little sense that everything has been turned up a notch.
Not flashy.
Not stuffy.
Not trying too hard.
Just elevated.
And sometimes that's exactly the kind of vacation I want.

P.S. Have you sailed Celebrity? What's the place onboard you kept finding yourself going back to? And if you've never sailed Celebrity but you're reading this thinking, “Okay...THIS sounds like me,” tell me that too. That's exactly the kind of thing I want to know when I'm helping you choose the right ship. 😉
