Why Cruises Create Better Memories Than Most Vacation

When people ask me why I love cruising so much, they usually expect me to talk about the ships.
The food.
The entertainment.
The beautiful beaches.
The convenience of waking up somewhere new every morning.
And while all of those things are wonderful...
That's not why I keep going back.
I don't think cruises create better memories because they're on ships.
I think they create better memories because they remove so many of the little things that usually get in the way of simply being together.
Think about your last vacation.

How much time did you spend deciding where to eat?
Looking up reviews.
Making reservations.
Finding parking.
Figuring out who's driving.
Trying to keep everyone happy.
Planning tomorrow before you'd even finished today.
None of those things are bad.
They're just... exhausting.
By the time you've made a hundred little decisions, you don't have much energy left to enjoy the people you traveled with.
Cruising is different.
You unpack once.
Your room moves with you.
Dinner is waiting.
Entertainment is around the corner.
Coffee is only a short walk away.
And somehow, all those tiny decisions disappear.
What takes their place is something much more valuable.
Time.
Time for a second cup of coffee on the balcony.
Time to sit through dessert because nobody has to drive home.
Time to watch the sunset instead of checking Google Maps.
Time to say, "Let's just stay here a little longer."
I've watched it happen over and over again.

Couples who are always busy at home suddenly find themselves talking for hours.
Friends laugh until they cry over dinner.
Complete strangers become familiar faces by the second day.
Someone says, "Meet us for breakfast tomorrow"
Another says, "We're headed to trivia if you want to join us."
Little by little...
A vacation becomes something more.
It becomes a collection of stories.
That's the part people remember.
Years later, they may not remember what they ordered for dinner on the third night.
But they'll remember laughing so hard they nearly spilled their dessert.
They'll remember swimming with sea turtles.

Watching the ocean from their balcony before anyone else was awake.
Meeting people they still keep in touch with today.
Those moments become part of their family's story.
I think that's why cruises feel different.
Not because they're perfect.
But because they make space for what matters most.
Connection.
Laughter.
Rest.
Shared experiences.
The kinds of moments we keep saying we'll make time for "someday."
When David and I started Stay Salty Travel Company, we thought we were helping people plan vacations.
Somewhere along the way, I realized we were really helping people create memories.
That's a responsibility I don't take lightly.
Because vacations come and go.
Photos eventually get tucked away.
Suitcases get unpacked.
But the stories...
The stories somehow keep getting better every time they're told.
And maybe that's why I love cruising.
Not because it's the easiest way to travel.
Not because the ships are beautiful.
Not even because I get to wake up in amazing places.
I love cruising because it creates space for the conversations we keep saying we'll have.
The laughter we don't make enough time for.
The friendships we didn't expect.
And the memories that somehow stay with us long after we've returned home.
Those are the vacations worth taking.
